Data Warehousing

Data Warehousing is the foundation of enabling consumers of information to produce information for themselves on an ad-hoc basis without the involvement of the information technology staff. Just as a the transactional database behind your business systems facilitates the smooth flow of the matters that make up your daily business, a Data Warehouse behind your information delivery mechanisms allows for the ease of producing the information that provides operational insight.

Data Warehousing is concerned with the proper architecture of databases in what is referred to as a star schema. This database is structured completely differently than conventional transactional databases. These databases are built using a category of information technology tools called ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load).

Sitting on top of the star schema modeled database is a metadata (or semantic) layer that describes the data to end users in English and not technical terms. This layer allows an end user to consume data and produce information without having to understand how the data is organized, stored, or hosted. This metadata layer also serves as an operational standard that facilitate that elusive ‘Single version of the truth’.
