Business Intelligence

Reporting is often thought of as Business Intelligence (BI). While reporting is an important component of BI, it only represents the ‘tip of the iceberg’. BI is concerned with the production, security and delivery of information.

The production of information is concerned with the format the consumer requires to utilize the information. Common examples include pixel perfect representations, PDF, Excel, Word, XML, and CSV.

The security of information is concerned with authenticating who the actual consumer of information is and then controlling what this person is allowed to see and what they’re allowed to do. For example, if you have sensitive information such as payroll, you have an obligation to protect the dissemination of social security numbers. In the case of mergers and acquisitions, the sharing and exchange of privileged information must be limited and protected to avoid contaminating a potential deal and avoid insider trading issues. This list goes on and on.

The delivery of information is concerned with how the consumer receives the information. For instance, an employee working within a company’s facility and inside the company firewall consumes information in a different manner than the bank associated with the company that has no access to the network resources. One may receive their information through an intranet portal; the other may have information pushed to them through email. There is no single answer — your business needs dictate the solution.

Business Intelligence capabilities require multiple technical disciplines to design, implement, and maintain the environment:

  1. Technical infrastructure skills to build the server foundations that facilitate BI functionality.
  2. Programming skills for the production of the information that is to be delivered.
  3. Data Warehousing skills to design, build and model the data to be consumed.
